Old is Gold! This certainly applies to fabrics. Nothing outdated or musty; old fabrics are exquisite! Old fabrics carry a unique charm and history with them. They are steeped in tales of bygone eras and can be a wonderful addition to various creative projects.

In this blog, we'll explore different types of old fabrics, with a focus on brocade and jacquard, Gobelin, Ottoman rib fabric, and printed fabrics with a vintage or antique look. We'll also discuss how these fabrics can be used in projects ranging from cosplay costumes to antique furniture restoration.

I. Brocade and Jacquard:
Brocade and jacquard are luxurious fabrics known for their intricate patterns and opulent appearance. These fabrics are often found in garments from various historical periods. They are woven rather than printed, hence often considered precious. Especially so in the past!

  1. Historical Clothing and Costumes Brocade and jacquard are popular choices for historical costumes. They are frequently used to create elegant dresses, corsets, and coats reminiscent of periods such as the Renaissance, Baroque, and the Victorian era.

  2. Carnival and Cosplay These fabrics are well-suited for creative expressions like carnival and cosplay. With their striking designs and rich colors, they can be transformed into fantastic costumes that capture attention.

  3. Accessories and Interior Decoration Remnants of brocade and jacquard can be used to craft beautiful accessories such as jewelry, purses, and pillowcases. They can also be framed as decorative wall panels to add a touch of sophistication to an interior.

II. Gobelin: Fabric Art
Gobelin is a unique type of fabric renowned for its beautiful woven images and scenes. It's often associated with art and history.

  1. Carpets and Tapestries Traditionally, Gobelin is used for crafting wall tapestries and carpets characterized by their detailed and vibrant designs. Old Gobelin fabrics can be repurposed into smaller wall tapestries or cushion covers.

Some fabrics are collector's items! If you spot Gobelin fabric and hesitate, don't. There's a good chance it's a one-time offer.

  1. Clothing Gobelin can be used to create unique garments that are true works of art. Think of jackets, skirts, or vests adorned with intricate Gobelin patterns that make a statement. Even in couture, Gobelin is beloved. There's nothing as beautiful as a timeless Gobelin jacket!

  2. Interior Decoration Old Gobelin fabrics can be used to make tablecloths, cushions, and curtains, adding a touch of historical elegance to any interior. Gobelin embodies coziness, darkness, warmth, and especially the allure of bygone times, which beautifully contrasts with the minimalist and industrial styles often seen in house décor.

Gobelin fabric: eternal love!
