DIY Firewood log carrier

7/12/2023

Picture
A firewood log carrier is a practical bag that you can use to transport firewood from the wood storage area to the indoor stove. It's a roll where you place the logs, easily lift and carry using extra sturdy wooden handles. For anyone using wood for heating, this carrier is a little gem and incredibly convenient!

Materials for the firewood log carrier:

The wood carrier is made of canvas.
Read all about this canvas here: Canvas fabric deserving compliments!

The canvas fabric, the webbing, and the charming label were purchased from Budgetstoffen.

You can purchase the embroidery pattern here: Lumberjack embroidery.

If you don't have an embroidery machine, you can opt for a cute appliqué or keep the bag as minimalist as possible.

Sewing pattern:

The sewing pattern is quite simple. If you follow the photos below, you should be able to recreate this carrier.

Fabric dimensions: 120 x 40 cm.
Cut 2 pieces of canvas (for the base) 10 x 24 cm.
Cut 4 pieces of canvas (for the handles)

You can cut the sticks from a broomstick or something thicker, like a wooden curtain rod. Of course, you can also purchase a piece that feels comfortable in your hand or use sturdy branches.
Ensure that the sticks are approximately 6 cm shorter (3 cm on each end) than the 40 cm width of the bag, otherwise, the sticks won't fit between the handles.

Here's how to make the firewood log carrier:

  1. Sew the two fabric pieces together along the long sides with the right sides facing each other. Leave a small opening so you can turn the bag inside out later.

  2. Now create the small fabric strips where the wood will go as handles. For extra strength, finish these with webbing.
  3. Sew the small fabric strips together on one side (right sides together) and turn them inside out.
  4. Place the fabric strips meant for the handles on the top edges (short side of the bag) and pin them in place. Check with the stick to ensure the distance is correct; otherwise, the sticks won't fit later. Sew the top edges closed.
  5. Turn the whole thing inside out and press or iron it well. Close the opening by hand.
  6. Topstitch around the entire bag using extra-strong thread.
  7. Add an extra webbing closure on the inside so you can secure the wood in place when you need to set the bag down with wood inside.
