Budget Chanel-style jacket!

Authentic couture Chanel jackets are priceless. This is not surprising because they are exclusively tailor-made for the rich and famous. Making a Chanel-style jacket yourself is a dream for many seamstresses. However, this is not cheap either because the Bouclé and Tweed fabrics are often expensive. But we have managed to make  a 'BUDGET Chanel-style jacket'  for inspiration!
Budget Chanel-style jacket
By 'a budget Chanel-style jacket' we mean a homemade jacket in the style of Chanel and as cheap as possible. Why? Because it ís possible and we want to show it is not necessary to spend a lot of money to still create the 'Chanel look'. Moreover, it is in any case a good plan not to spend too much money if you are making such a jacket for the first time.

The budget idea is mainly in saving money on the fabrics and materials. You can go a long way with a little creativity. For example, you don't have to buy expensive fringes yourself, because you can easily make them yourself from 30 centimeters of extra fabric. You can also save money on lining material and the shoulder pads.

Cheap, cheaper, cheapest!
We add  sum of the materials we have used. But first of all we will mention the sewing pattern. For this we used the sewing pattern Vogue V7975 that we already have used before.

However, you can also use other sewing patterns specifically for short jackets. Make sure you choose a sewing pattern with an open front piece or adjust your own sewing pattern. This is not difficult, it is just the idea of shortening the front panels slightly in terms of width and omitting the closure overlap.

Total materials:  30.70 euros (without the sewing pattern)

An explanation of the materials below:

Outer fabric:
We have used:
Furnish fabric. Upholstery fabrics are not always suitable for making clothing. But because this is a jacket is designed with open front, we still opted for this stiffer and sturdy fabric. Moreover, we tested beforehand with a sample of this fabric whether the fabric frayed properly. We wanted to make large frayed edges. This turned out to be going well.

Exterior fabric: 2 meters at 9.99 euros = 20.98 euros

In addition, there are a few simple tricks to make the fabric suitable for a jacket.
  1. Iron the fabric beforehand. The heat makes the fabric slightly softer, just like denim for jeans.
  2. Do NOT use the fabric as an interfacing for the front, but the lining entirely of lining material.
  3. Make sure you do not fold the fabric twice, but finish everything with a lock machine or zigzag edge and fold the fabric only once.
  4. Cut triangles everywhere where you sewed the fabric together and where there is a curve. This ensures that the fabric takes on nicer shapes and appears less stiff.
  5. Make the fraying by working one side with the lock machine, fray the other side to a centimeter next to the locked edge.
Other supplies:
Lining fabric: 1 meter at 1.99 euros = 1.99 euros
Shoulder pads: 2 pieces, together 1.75 euros
Cotton jersey for bias tape: 0.5 meters at 6.99 = 3.45 euros
Decorative edge: 3 meters at 1.20 euros = 3.60
TOTAL: 30.70 euros!

To create bias border:
We have assumed you have a bias binder. If not, these are very useful tools to make your own bias tape. For this jacket we used the largest size (2.5 cm). We chose half a meter of black cotton jersey because it is slightly stretchy. Just like cotton bias tape, you can then create nicer curves and curves.

Tip: Cut the strip of fabric at an angle of 48 mm wide. Now you can make a bias edge that is 1 inch wide. On top of the biastrim, we have made a white decorative border to create the "Chanel look".

Handsewing is fun!
Like real couture and to making off a Chanel-style jacket, there is a lot of sewing handwork involved. For example, it is absolutely NOT beautiful if you sew (by sewing machine) the pockets on the outside of the fabric. Always use handseweing which makes the pockets-stitches invisible. This makes it look as if the bags are ON THE TOP and there is a nice bulge. (as with real Haute couture).

We also sewed the black bias edge and the white trim by hand. As a result, you do not see the stitching and the result is much better!

Summarized:

Make a Chanel-style jacket for less than fifty euros? That seems almost impossible, but it is possible. Think out-of-the-box and work with fabrics that are very beautiful, but are not suitable for clothing at first. In other words: take a look at upholstery fabrics, decoration fabrics or curtain fabrics. Sometimes you will find beautiful fabrics and you can easily transform them into a Chanel-Style jacket.

Coco Chanel was inventive, creative and innovative. You can do that too!

And furthermore: buy the supplies cheaply from Budget fabrics. It doesn't have to be expensive at all.
