Tips & Tricks:
The best sewing supplies, tools and accessories
A sewing machine, a piece of fabric and an idea ..
these are enough to do the job..? many novice seamstress might think... . But that is unfortunately not true. With a sewingmachine, a sewingpattern and a piece of fabric, you can go a long way but you are not there yet.
Let's think for a while: cooking or baking is your passion. A pan, a recipe, the ingredients and let's start cooking. But that is not the reality. In an average household you should not just open a kitchen cupboard, chances are that a load of things will look at you. As soon as cooking or baking is a passion, a lot of kitchen tools are needed and wanted. From spatulas to food processors. They make it easier for you, they give you more options and possibilities and you enjoy the cooking big time.
Sewing as a hobby or passion!
This also applies to sewing. No overcrowded cupboards full of stuff are needed, but we like to mention the best sewing supplies, tools or accessoires. These are simply very useful and make it easier for you. And make you enjoy sewing even more. Of course you do not have to purchase all these items immediately. But put them on your wishlist. Or buy the tools as soon as they are on sale. On the market they are sometimes in large containers, or on webshops they are listed under 'parts' or sometimes under 'haberdashery'. In this case, the following applies: cheap is expensive. It is better to buy a good good pair of scissors than ten times a bad cheap version. And the first option is also a lot more sustainable.

These little sewing tools are BIG friends:
- a seam ripper (indispensable tool!)
- good scissors: the golden scissors, pinking shears, small scissors and a wire cutter
- sewingmachine needles (always have different sizes in stock: silk fabrics, elastic fabrics or thicker jeans, ask for different sewing machine needles than the other fabrics)
- sewingmachine feet (every sewing machine has a few standard feet, but if you sew intensively, several special feet are a very useful tool)
- corner and edge former (it's just a small piece of plastic, but oh so handy to shape corners. And many times better than puncturing the fabric with scissors)
- a pincushion and especially ironing pads! In other words: called Tailor's ham.
BIG sewing tools and accessories
The sewing mannequin or dress-forms:
We have written about the sewing mannequin before: A mannequin is the seamstresses best friend.
A mannequin is THE best friend of a seamstress! No, we don't mean mannequins like the mannequins that are in the windows of fashion shops, but adjustable mannequins. These are indispensable for tailor-made clothing! A mannequin is a handy tool, not only because it will save many fitting sessions, but also because the clothing can be continuously adjusted as desired. Viewing the mannequin from a distance ensures that you look critically at the clothing. It is also a lot more convenient to peel off clothes. Think especially of the advantages to make the back nicely tailored. No matter how creative and handy you are; no seamstress has ever managed to do that in front of a mirror ....
An overlocker and a coverlocker
What is the advantage of a locking machine? With a locking machine, also called "overlock", stretchy fabrics are sewn together and finished with the 3- or 4-thread overlock stitch. This gives your sewing a professional look. You can simply refine woven or frayed fabrics. In addition, the lock machine can also create blind seams and clean zoom edges and edges, at the same time cuts and lures the lure. Turn each garment to the left and see the seams: clean and directly with an overlocking machine.
A locking machine is a supplement to your sewing machine, but not a substitute. However, a lock machine is essential if you want to finish your sewing really nice. Sewing is just the professional degree.
The difference between a (over)lockmachine and a cover stitcherA lockmachine is therefore there for better cutting and closing work. For the typical cover stitches, which are used for refining tricot fabrics, there is a coverlock machine. Cover stitches and top stitches are the stitches that you see below or at the neck of a T-shirt. You can only make these stitches with a coverlock machine, but not with a standard lock machine. There are also combination machines, which we do not recommend.
A overlockmachine as an indispensable sewingtool.
If you do not have a lock machine, it is advisable to buy a lockmachine first. Later, you can always buy a cover stitch machine, but a lock machine makes for a nice finish for your sewing. These stitches can only be made with a coverlock machine, but not on a regular lockmachine. There are also combination machines, but we do not advise them. If you often work with stretch fabrics and like to make t-shirts, tight dresses or clothing from jogging fabric, fleece or French terry, then a cover locker is a fantastic tool.

Suitcases and bags
Are tou going to a workshop, sewing lessons or on vacation? A bag or a suitcase is really a must. The big advantage is that at least the parts are not forgotten because how embarrassing.... to arrive at sewing lessons and to conclude that the foot pedal is accidentally still at home? The special sewing bags and sewing cases have a good layout so that you do not forget the parts, but also smaller materials such as yarn, elastic, needles, fabric, patterns, the manual, etc.
Where to buy?
Most sewing tools are available in sewingmachine stores or online sewingmachine stores such as Matri. Smaller sewing tools, as scissors and haberdashery are often for sale on markets, sewingmachine shops and often online fabric stores. Brands such as Schmetz (sewing machine needles), PryM (smaller tools), Söllingen (scissors) are not cheap, but they are excellent in quality.
How to store?
Some day (soon) there will be more than a sewing machine, a piece of fabric and a sewing pattern.... And suddenly a sign hangs on the door: "Sewing workshop" or "Sewing studio". In time, you may have a real cutting table, a sewingmachine, an overlocker and a coverlocker. And a sewing box full of useful tools.
Then it is mainly a question of keeping order, efficient storage systems and managing your Sewing Studio as it should be. Good luck !
