Our review:
First impression:
Excellent packaging. The lock machine is packed tightly with lots of polystyrene for protection. It arrived in perfect condition.
The coverlocker looks like a sewingmachine, not like an overlocker. The coverlockmachine looks easy and user-friendly.
The machine is made of strong plastic (not metal). It is therefore easy to lift, saving weight and avoiding an old-fashioned look.
The coverlockmachine is very stable and stands firm/steady on a desk.
Let’s get to work!
1. The cover and the manual:
The cover is a soft cover which looks very good and is very functional.
The manual limits itself to three languages, Dutch, German and French. The manual is in A4 format.
The letters are normal size and the visual instructions are large and clear. The manual is not a thick book, just a few pages. It is easy to read it in total within a half hour. And it is worth it to get to know your coverlockmachine.
2. Preparation:
The lighting is good. The light appears clear and focused. Replacing the light should be easy but is not described in the manual.
3. Threading:
Threading is easier than with a lock machine. Just take a good look and make sure you do this the right way. Pages 18 to 26 are about threading. The process is explained step by step and fortunately the drawings are very helpful.
The manual is clear, even for a beginner. Threading the threads is described per thread on a whole page. Color codes are used on the cover lock machine itself. This is always handy.
Threading the bottom grabber is very easy, while this is usually the most difficult. Getting the thread through the two very small holes requires some concentration and steady hands. However, with the supplied tweezers, or the tweezers with a magnifying glass, this is certainly possible.
Tip: start with red threads. This makes it easier to see what you are doing and you are less likely to make mistakes, such as with white threads.
4. Coverlocking:
The Coverlock machine has a lot of space in the middle. This allows you to easily even sew a center line of your sewingwork without having to cram the fabric between the sewing machine. A big advantage, especially if you have large pieces of fabric, such as curtains or upholstery fabrics.
The Coverlock machine can easily handle thicker fabrics. That is also necessary because with the cover stitches, the fabrics are folded to create a beautiful edge. Stitch length can be easily adjusted. There are three positions. The differential can also be adjusted. You can do this even during coverlocking (with your right hand) so that you do not have to move the fabric. This results in an amazing professional-looking sewingwork.
If you stop at the end of the fabric, or even halfway through, you can easily pull the threads forward first and then lay them back by passing the thread cutter attached to the machine. Make sure you have enough length so that you can finish the threads neatly.
Tip: In the book "Sewing with the lock machine" by Julia Hincks, it is described how you can also make beautiful, special cover lock stitches.
The sound of the engine is "nice". The machine has a pleasant sound.
The free-arm option is IDEAL! Let's see if a sleeve neatly overlocked if that free-arm option is not there. That certainly gives a lot of hassle with the material. The free-arm option makes sewing couture a lot easier because you can work more precisely.
5. Extra's:
If you like quilting or are used to working with a sewing machine's extension table, the Janome's extension table is a must.
This pull-up table is spacious, stable and ensures that the fabric is positioned properly. We have tried this sliding table and see it as an essential part.
These two extra feet are wonderful:
The "clear view cover stitch foot" or transparent presser foot has a transparent top. This is especially ideal if, for example, you sew white t-shirt with white thread. Extra good visibility is a must. Also during decorative stitches, it is nice to look carefully. The presser foot has handy markings, which means that you can work very precisely and also ensure that the start and end of the stitch placement are accurate.
The "elastic gathering attachment foot" or elastic guide is ideal if you make lingerie or small children's clothing, for example. The elastic will stay better and come in or on the fabric. Moreover, it simply works better and makes this specific job an easy job!
Both feet and the pull-up table are in one package.
Maintenance:
The coverlock machine does not need much maintenance. The manual contains tips for maintenance and trouble-shooting in the event of problems. Also on the supplier's website are a few links with tips for maintenance.
Parts are also always available: https://www.naaimachine-onderdelen.eu/
You can also easily find lost manuals by downloading them. These manuals can also be found per brand and type of lock machine on the link above.
